 Health benefits of home-grown greens

We have discussed the beautiful design of our hydroponic system and the amazing extra zing, the cherry on top that herbs bring to your food. In this post, we shall dive into the health benefits. I know, I have a hard time believing it myself, something this tasty can also be healthy. This blog will not only make you eat delicious food, but help you live longer and healthier. I know the facts might bore you but believe me knowing the benefits makes them taste better.

Tomatoes are widely believed to be vegetables, though botanically they are fruits. With this little fact in mind, you won’t be too surprised to learn that tomatoes are loaded with antioxidants, especially with lycopene. Most of you will not have heard of lycopene, but it reduces the risk of heart diseases and cancer. Canned or heated tomatoes are higher in lycopene than raw ones. The benefits won’t stop there, they are a source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C as well as potassium. If you don’t eat tomatoes yet, you surely will now. I, for example, doubled the amount of tomatoes I eat per day #keepinghealthy.

These cousins of tomatoes are believed to have been cultivated already in 7500 BC. That is a long time of making people and animals sweat, but do not worry, after my list of facts, you want to sweat more. Like their cousin, chillies are a source of vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin B6, as well as potassium and copper. They are also packed with antioxidants such as Capsanthin and Lutein, which helps with better eyesight. So, what benefits do the above-mentioned vitamins and Antioxidants bring, except desire to have better eyesight? Chillies help you with pain relief, so you are one step closer to being superman. The other step you need? To be in shape, well fun fact, chillies help you lose weight, by accelerating fat burn. Next to eating chillies you only need a suitable outfit to be the next superman.

You want to be a royalty? Eating basil might make you one, the word basil comes from the Greek word basilikhon, which means royal. Basil contains many Vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants e.g. Vitamin K, vitamin A, lutein, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin and beta-cryptoxanthin. Many of basil's health benefits come from these antioxidants and its essential oils. Many of the antioxidants found in basil help you prevent cancer, reduce stress and depression, improve fasting blood sugar and cholesterol. Since basil is still widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, there are numerous health benefits. Want to make sure that your memory keeps functioning when getting older? Basil might be the answer.

So how can you combine these greens?

You want to be healthy, live a long life and be the best version of you? Start by eating healthy and delicious food, packed with Vitamins and Antioxidants. By combining the three greens we have been talking about today, you are one step closer to being a superhero by improving your health. Now the question is, how do you combine these three in one recipe? It is not that hard; you can for example create an Italian recipe out of them. Make bruschetta, where you infuse the chillies with the tomatoes and make your own basil pesto. You do not feel like eating Italian and want something more filling? Then opt to a tomato-based curry and finely chopped basil on top.
